Heather is a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner and Panchakarma Technician at Kanyakumari Ayurveda.  She is also a Registered Yoga Teacher trained at Kripalu Center.  That is where we met as she was a valued resource working as a faculty assistant in the yoga teacher training program.

I love Heather’s approachable style and ease in sharing the ancient science of Ayurveda and asked her to contribute some basic action steps for our project this month.  *CCF tea has been a regular part of my life for the past few years and I’m thrilled to have her share it with you at the bottom of this post.  Enjoy. – Jen McLaughlin, Fed Wellness

Ayurvedic Techniques for Clarity

1. Meditation

The best Ayurvedic technique for clarity is meditation.  Translation: close eyes, shut out external stimuli, and look inward. This reflective practice is like strong medicine for the mind and gives a much needed rest to our poor overstimulated eyes.

As you calm the mind with meditation, it helps to “see” your life more clearly and honestly. Even if its just for a few minutes, when you sit quietly, check in with your inner voice, and listen deeply you connect with your innate wisdom. This deep knowing fades confusion and uncertainty. Find a group to learn how. It’s more fun that way.

2. Self-study

Also called, svadhyaya in Sanskrit. Learn how to look at yourself in a non-attached and non-judgmental way, you “see” how your relationship with the world reflects your relationship with self.

This also includes studying literature that helps guide our self-learning. It doesn’t have to be so serious. Find a group of like-minded people and make it social.

*Note that these important clarity techniques are all about the mind. There’s a reason for that: it all starts there. A happy mind supports a happy and healthy body. Studies about the placebo effect have proven this long ago but its worth finding out for yourself.

3. Neti

Neti is nasal rinsing with a saline solution usually done with a Neti Pot.

4. Nasya

Nasya is a special oil to moisturize nasal passages and ward off microbes that might make you sick or sneeze often. Some nasya oils have been steeped in herbs to have different effects on the mind: clarifying or calming are the most common strains. For example, if you need help with a clear mind in the morning a clarifying nasya can help open your eyes. If you need help clearing your conscious before going to bed, try the calming kind before you close your eyes. There are many brands and varieties available. Here’s my personal favorite.

5. Netra Tarpana

A cleansing treatment particular to the eyes is Netra Tarpana. It improves vision and treats eye disorders. It’s great for anyone who reads a lot or sits in front of a computer all day, long-distance driving, etc.

Search for an Ayurvedic Clinic near you. If you live near me (Heather) in the SE Wisconsin area you’re lucky to be close to Kanyakumari Ayurveda in Glendale where I was trained.


When it comes to supporting clarity in the body and mind, CCF tea is the way to go.  CCF stands for Cumin, Coriander, and Fennel, the trifecta of healing spices used in Ayurveda also known as the self-healing medicine of Yoga.

Ayurveda is rooted in the idea that each person has a unique balanced constitution, and it is imbalance in this constitution that leads to sickness.  Cumin balances Kapha/the Water element, Coriander cools Pitta/Fire, and Fennel calms Vata/Wind, the most important of the bio-energies known as the Doshas. (We will talk more about those in another post.)

Whole CCF seeds are roasted and steeped to make a tea that is commonly used in cleansing diets.  If you feel you could use a detox, this is the brew to turn to.  It tastes great and it’s easy and inexpensive to make, too.

1 tsp whole cumin seeds

1 tsp whole coriander seeds

1 tsp whole fennel seeds


*optional: a touch of raw sugar, honey, slice of fresh ginger root or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.


1. Dry roast (toast without oil in a hot pan for a few minutes) equal amounts of CCF seeds until fragrant.
Roast the cumin last since it toasts easily.

2. To brew a few cups, take 1 tsp. of each (or mix them together and use a Tablespoon) and steep in hot water for 5-10 minutes. The longer the stronger.


Ayurveda links all health matters to the digestion. If its working well you can safely guess that so is everything else.

If you’re looking to balance your digestive system, take this tea with ginger root right before meals.  A slice of fresh ginger steeped with the seeds can add a bit of zip, ward off colds, inflammatory toxins and keep the digestive fire, well, fired up!

That said, the only other beverage as effective is good ole’ pure water. Don’t forget to get plenty of that, too. Aim for 4-8 cups of warm water a day plus 2-3 cups of CCF tea.
